Peanut Butter Energy Balls

A simple snack that actually nourishes
If your kids seem to be hungry all the time, you’re not alone. Many children snack frequently throughout the day and still struggle with energy crashes, mood swings, or feeling unsatisfied. Often, it’s not about how much they’re eating, it’s about whether their snacks are giving their bodies what they truly need.
That’s why I love this recipe so much. These peanut butter energy balls are one of those rare wins: easy to make, familiar enough that kids happily eat them, and nourishing enough to support steady energy and calmer moods. They’re also a great recipe for kids to make on their own, which builds confidence and connection around food.
The oats in this recipe provide fiber that helps slow digestion and stabilize blood sugar. Peanut butter adds protein and healthy fats that keep kids feeling full longer, while ground flaxseeds quietly support digestion and gut health. A little maple syrup and mini chocolate chips keep things fun, because nourishment should still feel enjoyable.
I often suggest snacks like this as a replacement for packaged bars or crackers. You’re not taking anything away; you’re simply offering something that gives the body more of what it needs.
Ingredients
3 cups gluten-free rolled oats
1¼ cups natural peanut butter (smooth works best)
½ cup pure maple syrup
⅓ cup mini chocolate chips
¼ cup ground flaxseed
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Pinch of sea salt
Directions
Add all ingredients to a large bowl and mix until fully combined. Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes so the oats and flax can absorb moisture. Scoop and roll into balls. Store in the fridge for up to one week.
If the mixture feels slightly sticky, lightly dampen your hands or add a tablespoon more oats. If it feels too dry, add a spoonful of peanut butter.
Optional Variations
- Nut-free: Use sunflower seed butter
- Extra protein: Add 2–3 tablespoons of protein powder
- Lower sweetness: Reduce maple syrup to ⅓ cup and add a splash of milk or water if needed
Enoy!
